I want to talk to you about the ‘Monday Morning Diet’.
This is my name for the common mentality after a weekend ‘off’ – where we decide to get back on track on a Monday morning.
It follows a week of eating in some sort of restrictive mindset, and then hitting the weekend and craving a treat or reward for our hard work. It marries into the mindset of the working week/weekend off, and after a long week at work we want to kick back and relax – and so many of us treat our diets in exactly the same way.
This mentality suggests that a healthy diet has to be an endless test of our willpower and patience. The Monday Morning diet is also known as a vicious circle, that can only be escaped by changing our mentality and thinking about healthy eating as a constant part of our lives as opposed to a temporary fix, or fad to suit our current goals and motivations.
Choosing to eliminate foods that you really enjoy from your diet will never be a long term solution because you will inevitably want to eat these foods again at some point.
The trick instead, is to change your mindset so that you spend as much time as possible making healthy choices, that you like and enjoy and would happily choose again and again – because they taste good!
Then, when you fancy something that you’d usually cut out on a traditional ‘diet’, you can absolutely have a little indulgence without feeling guilty for doing so, as so many of us do.
The best part?
It doesn’t even have to be a weekend for you to enjoy these foods.
When you drop the Monday Morning diet mentality, you drop all associations that certain foods should be saved or avoided at certain times of the week.
When you focus on simply eating healthy as often as possible, you don’t have to worry about the occasional ‘treat’ because the majority of your diet is nutritious and beneficial to your long-term health and well-being.
When you focus on eating foods that taste great, that you made from scratch rather than from a packet or takeaway… you don’t have to worry about calories all the time, because you’re diet becomes more balanced, full of wholefoods that will fill you up. Your appetite will regulate and your energy levels will improve.
When you focus on what you can eat rather than what you can’t, you no longer feel restricted and miserable and suddenly healthy eating is a piece of cake. (Pardon the pun!)
So this weekend, instead of looking forward to treating yourself, realise that all days are created equal and if you focus on making good choices every day of the week, then you never have to face the Monday Morning Diet ever again.
